From Tyler Gottschalk:

The North Marin United 04B Green completed a historic season this past weekend, lifting the NorCal State Cup in impressive fashion, beating Tecos Hayward 6-1.

Two seasons ago in one of coach Yasert Ortega's first games at the helm, the Tecos handed North Marin a 9-1 defeat.  Almost two years later, the thirteen goal difference illustrated just what a fantastic job coach Ortega has done with this incredibly talented group of boys.  It wasn't just all the wins over the years, but it was the quality the team played with.  It wasn't rare to see 10 pass sequences leading to first time finishes, crosses from the flanks being volleyed or headed home, reverse passes setting a player free in behind to dribble the goal keeper and tap into the empty net...

After finishing 5th at the State Cup a year ago, North Marin United was given the #1 seed going into the event this year, and they didn't disappoint.  After getting into the top 8 on the 7th tie-breaker, they dismantled the opposition the rest of the way, winning their quarter-final over San Juan 6-0, then their semi-final over SMC Star 6-1, before dropping another six goals on the Tecos in the final.

The boys had proven without a doubt that they were deserving champions as they lifted North Marin United's first ever NorCal State Cup Championship!

Deana Dearborn's report:

This was a long and hard battle that came down to 11 determined boys giving all they have to the very end.  They won a game the weekend prior forcing a 3 way tie, and earning them a place in the top 8. After that team work and great soccer kicked in leading to three impressive victories 6-1, 6-0 and 6-1 in the final match against Tecos Hayward.

For the final game the boys came out onto the field calm and ready to play. A free kick gave Tecos the first goal. NMU Boys quickly came back to tie the game 1-1.  NMU scored another goal just before half-time. Something kicked in the second half.  The boys say that they “unleashed a dragon” and four more goals were theirs before the final whistle blew. The defense shut down the other team in the second half, not allowing any more goals.

For those watching the game, they witnessed impressive soccer. There was no doubt that these boys deserved to be champions.
